ARCHITECT’S STATEMENT //

The project brief was initially driven for a lifestyle understanding of restaurants on arterial roads at the end of the street. The second aspect of the brief is to be able to provide expected qualities for a sort term rental.

Luxuries of large kitchens and secondary bathrooms were immediately dismissed, but replaced with luxury in versatility and moderation. With the use of folding and sliding planes within the addition allows to change the perception of depth and the dynamics of the majority of spaces.

We used solar orientation to determine volumes and form. Earthy materials with strong thermal mass properties have been used to create juxtaposition between the light coloured but light restricted original dwelling.

Existing ceiling heights from the original dwelling and capture it within a robust form. The architecture becomes wedged between the concrete block blades that traverse the boundaries.

Relationship to the street scape is offered by contributing to the and inconsistent rhythm of picket fencing. Contextually the site shares a common wall to the west and is land locked to the east by neighbouring boundary walls. Advantageously we opened up our only face to the north to maximise direct winter sun and control direct summer light. With a restricted relationship to nature court yards are used efficiently to engage where possible. An open awning at the northern end of the roof plane is suggestive of framing the sky as a reference to a connection with nature.
