Crafers West Interior
When introduced to John’s original concept of the garden pavilion we thought we understood the idea, but living in it has affected us more than we thought. The engagement of our garden and the surrounding environment has given us pleasure every day. Also the thermal performance is very good... the pavilion seems to maintain a constant warmth in winter without heating. The new home is chalk and cheese as compared to our original home.
Crafers West Verandah and Link
ARCHITECT’S STATEMENT //
Chalk and Cheese. To bring the clients out from the dark, sullen, introverted walled warren and up into a light filled garden conservatory.
RELATIONSHIP OF BUILT FORM TO CONTEXT
The existing house remains as the lower solid anchor.
The link is a stepping pivot point which allows the pavilion to rise up and orientate to the north. Aesthetic based on the feathering of the edges.
Steel flashings and sections are crafted to a stepped taper.
The ceiling billows up and this in conjunction with recessed pocket glass assist in enhancing the lightness of the roof form.
A colonnade of shiplap timber and external steel shutter guides leads onto fragmentation of the form to the east and west.
Integrated recessed BAL 40 bushfire shutters used to protect the pavilion. These also act to enhance the passive solar performance. Concrete cellar with secondary exit to be used as an emergency retreat. Fire pump in cellar with exhaust to exterior. Sprinklers on roof.
